Outdoor activities in Florence

An active holiday immersed in nature

The area around Florence, from Tyrrhenian Sea to the Apennines,  flourishes with a lush and vigorous nature, making it a fabulous place for outdoor activities. Hiking, cycling and mountain biking, plus sailing and water sports: all these and more await you for outdoor experiences in touch with nature.

A hike to discover Fiesole

If you feel like stretching your legs and exploring an exceptionally beautiful village overlooking the city with breathtaking panoramic views, Fiesole is at a perfect hiking distance  from the hu Firenze Camping in Town along the Via degli Dei, the historic Bologna - Florence way. From the village, walk along the Arno River until you reach the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Turn right and walk the entire length of Via Cavour to Piazza della Libertà. Continue in the direction of Fiesole, keeping the Mugnone river to your left. The route continues with a climb up to the convent of San Domenico and then finally to Fiesole. Simply follow the same route in the opposite direction to return.

Cycling along the Arno

The Ciclovia dell'Arno (Arno cycle route) runs right alongside the hu Firenze Camping in Town site. It’s an easy 15-minuite ride along the cycle path to reach the city centre, but if you are looking for a challenge, the same cycle path runs along the entirety of the river, from its source on Monte Falterona to the river’s mouth at Pisa, crossing the provinces of Arezzo and Florence and allowing you to discover territories rich in history and culture. If you follow the flow of the river, the route is always slightly downhill but remember, at some point, you’ll have to turn back uphill.

Bilancino

Lake Bilancino in Mugello

If you’re a fan of water sports, you will find plenty on offer inland from Florence. On arriving at the lake Bilancino, set like a jewel between the Mugello hills, you’ll be spoilt for choice between sailing, canoeing and fishing. This reservoir lake is a fantastic place to master the basics of sailing on manageable boats also designed for kids, or to hire a canoe, paddle along the banks and take a dip in the water, a refreshing relief in the summer months when the heat can be relentless. Otherwise, if you are after something more relaxing, try your hand at casting your hook to catch carp, trout, pike and catfish.

San Gimignano

The Via Francigena on foot and bicycle

A section of the Via Francigena from the Passo della Cisa Cisa crosses Tuscany, passing through Massa, Lucca and Siena. It is the most popular walking route in the region and the most visited in all of Italy. If you want a peek at the wonders along this ancient pilgrims way, we recommend that you walk or cycle the stages from Lucca that continue through hill and valley towards Altopascio and San Miniato up to the unmistakable skyline of San Gimignano. From here, you can continue on through olive groves in a dreamy landscape until you reach Monteriggioni, a walled village that that is an introduction to the glories that await you in Siena.

If you still have time, the medieval alleys of Siena will lead you out onto the dirt roads that intersect the enchanting scenery of the Crete Senesi, studded with magnificent hamlets such as Bagno Vignoni and avenues lined with rows of cypress trees that outline the landscape of the Val d'Orcia.

A shot of adrenalin at the Bagni di Lucca Canyon Park

If you’re are looking for adrenaline-filled thrills, the Bagni di Lucca Canyon park is for you: a cable route suspended above an emerald green river is waiting to hurtle you through verdant and inaccessible gorges on 100-metre long zip lines and challenge your balance skills on rope bridges, slacklines and rock passages suspended over a spectacular stretch of the Lima torrent. You can also explore the canyon on a SUP, paddling in the section of the river that flows between vertiginous walls of the Crocodile Straits for an experience you will never forget. For some calm after all the intense excitement, a yoga session floating on a board on the waters of a beautiful lagoon is the perfect finish to a splendid day out.
