A theatre that has grown with Florence
Before becoming a theatre, this place had many different lives.
Its origins date back to the 14th century, and over time the building has served many different purposes. It was once a reformatory, later a performance venue linked to the birth of Stenterello, Florence’s traditional comic character, and eventually also a cinema.
After being closed for more than forty years, a major restoration project has brought it back to life in the heart of Florence.
The renovation preserved the theatre’s intimate character, including its horseshoe-shaped auditorium, stucco work and other historic details, while introducing a more contemporary language.
The result is a space where past and present sit naturally side by side.
